I’m alive!

Posted: July 23, 2013 in Faith, Uncategorized

Did you miss me? I have no excuses why it’s taken me so long to write. Things are busy – yes, but I just have not prioritized like I should have.

Anyway, I’m wondering if any of you have ever experienced the “peaks and valleys” of being a Christian? I remember our pastor talking about it one time. And I remember thinking…”valley”? Really? How can there be valleys when you’re a Christian and you put your faith in God? THAT won’t happen to me!

Ha! You know what’s next. God heard me…and graciously allowed me to experience said “valley”. Hmmm… thanks? Was I really supposed to be thankful during this time? Why yes, Angel, you were. You are. Always.

This valley, really doesn’t feel good. I can only compare it to a sort of depression where when things go wrong, it feels amplified. In reality, it’s probably not “that” bad, but when you’ve been on that peak for so long, coming down just a little bit, feels bad. Do you know what I mean?

The good news…things have started to turn around as I’ve been making my way through this. And I’m feeling a lot better these days. And guess what? I’ve learned a lot. It’s true that God uses these trials we face to help shape us and learn to trust him more. The peaks are good, yes. Glorius in fact. But the valleys can be just as good too. Because once we get through them trusting in God, we are much stronger in faith. And I am very thankful for that!

Cry Baby

Posted: April 27, 2013 in Uncategorized

I am a cry baby.  I cry A LOT.  When I say A LOT, I mean, like watching cartoons, listening to the radio, reading books.  Last night, I was crying watching Project Runway.  I hide my tears, or at least try too. And I won’t watch anything that I know will make me cry – like “chick flicks”. (They are a big no-no in my book.)   I somehow got tricked in to watching “My sister’s keeper” a few months ago with a friend and startled her when I blurted out half way through “What the heck is wrong with you people watching movies like this that you KNOW are going to make you cry!”  I was angry that the movie made me feel so much pain.

This morning, I was listening to an audio book while running and one of the characters was mad, yelling at everyone and I just started crying!  I mean, behind his anger, I knew there was a person in pain and that…well pains me!  I had to have a little conversation with myself..”Angel, it’s just a book.”  Fictional character or not, I wish I could take everyone’s pain away from them.

Sadly, I cannot.  But Jesus can.  In Matthew 11:28, Jesus says.  “”Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”   Ahhhh.  Isn’t that great to know?  If you ask for it, God can give you peace beyond your own understanding.  Thank you Lord!

On a Mission!

Literally…I’m going on a mission trip to Macedonia. Macedonia?! Where is THAT!? Macedonia is a country in Europe (see map). The fact that I’m going on a mission trip isn’t really what I wanted to write about today. What I want to write about is how God is using me there. I’ve been on an international mission trips twice – both times to Guatemala. In Guatemala we fed the poor, loved on the orphans and rescued babies, worked on constructing a new hospital, and just generally lent a helping hand.

So when the opportunity came about to go to Macedonia, I was super excited…thinking I’d be doing some of the same things. (Because that is what you think about when you hear mission trip, right?) Before jumping on the “yes” wagon though, I prayed thoughtfully about it…wanting to make sure that God wanted me to go and that it wasn’t just me selfishly wanting to go. So, I asked God to please make it very clear to me that He wanted me to go.

When the call came to give me information on the trip, I listened intently to what we’d be doing. About two minutes in to the call, I heard the words that were meant specifically for me. “We’ll be helping a local church with marketing and technology.”

Now…most of you reading this know me…but I know some of you do not. For those of you who don’t….my passion is….marketing with technology. So there it was. Clear as a bell. I smiled, looked up and thanked God. He, as always, was directing my path.

So this trip will be A LOT different than the others. But, I’m ready for it and I know God will show up in amazing ways. Because, He always does.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come anad pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek with all your heart.” Jeremiah 29:11-13

Tune In!

If you want to hear God more often, then make it easy for Him!  Listen to Christian music, subscribe to blogs, devotionals, talk to other Christians, etc.  God uses all these things to speak directly to you.  I was reminded of this last night.

I wasn’t having a very good evening.  I was lonely.  I was missing my son terribly.  And what was I doing?  Sitting on the couch reading a James Patterson novel flipping back and forth on the tv watching nothing worth talking about!  Finally, I decided to take a bath (which is where I like to just soak and pray – TMI, I know – sorry!)  Anyway, I didn’t blast Christian music (which is also what I like to do as I soak and pray) but instead just soaked and prayed and I admit, cried some.  😦

When I got out, I decided to catch up on some of my devotionals and what was the first devotional I read?  “If you want an antidote for loneliness, here it is:  You will never be separated from God’s love….You will never be lonely because you can tune into God’s love.”  (Thank you Daily Hope with Rick Warren!)

I realized that I hadn’t been reading my daily bible readings, listening to Christian music, or spending much time at all with the One who loves me the most.  Duh.  No wonder I was feeling blue!

I grinned up at God, said “got it!”, he said “good” and I immediately felt better.

Superbowl Aftermath.

I don’t know about you, but I am exhausted today!  I’m not used to staying up late.  Heck, I’m normally tucked all cozy in bed by 9 o’clock.  But last night, like most of America, I stayed up to watch the Superbowl.  It was a real nail-biter and since I’m a Ravens fan, I was very pleased with the outcome!

However, today, all I can think about is an interview with Ray Lewis that aired a few hours before the game.  He was asked about what he would tell the families affected by the murder case he was involved in many years ago . (Sorry, I don’t know all the details of those events.)  Anyway, he responded something along the lines of God not using people for good who would be involved in such things.  Forgive me if I don’t get that exactly right.  But that is in essence what he said.  It disturbed me because it’s those EXACT people that God uses.

Moses, Abraham, Jacob, Samson, Joseph, David, Solomon, Peter, Paul – they were all pretty messed up.  But today they are all considered amongst the greatest men of all time! God can do amazing things through any of us.  All of us!  And that is what I wish Ray Lewis would have said.

New Beginnings.

I love new beginnings.  So many people look forward to a new year to “start over”.  Personally, I look forward to every DAY.  Because every day is a chance to begin again.  I’ve said that so many times to my son, to friends, co-workers, etc.  For some reason, when we fail or dissapoint ourselves or others, we tend to get an attitude that we will never change.  And that’s so not true.  We can change, it just takes practice – and will-power!

I actually changed a lot of things in 2012, and one of them is that I listen almost exclusively to christian radio.  Every morning when I wake up, I crank up Klove.  Every day on the way back and forth to work – KLove.  And I’ve noticed a huge difference in the way I feel throughout the day by starting each day with such uplifting music.

For 2013, I plan to continue on my journey and be a better person – the kind of person that God wants me to be.  I’m not sure where my path will lead, but I do know that I control a lot of it by the choices I make.  And if one day, I make a bad choice – I know that every day is a new chance to begin again!

Hung Over

Posted: December 26, 2012 in Uncategorized

Not from alcohol!  But from just too much emotion.  This was the first Christmas in 16 years without my son.  He’s at a private school in another state, which I’m happy about because he is doing well and learning a lot.  But, wow, what an emotional day.  Every time I started to feel sorry for myself I remembered “the reason for the season”, which is Jesus of course!  So, all day was a roller coaster ride of emotions. Down, missing my son…Up remembering Jesus came to save us.  And today…I just feel…well, hung over!

Having said that, I’m just so thankful that I have a relationship with Jesus and I just couldn’t imagine getting through missing my son without Him.  I’m so thankful to have that perspective.
