Praise You in this Storm

There I go with another song title.  But how appropriate this song by Casting Crowns was during Hurricane Sandy.  It was literally a storm.  But there are all kinds of “storms” in our lives, aren’t there?  And during them we wonder – where is God?  I know I have – many times.  But the further along the journey I go, the more I am able to stop and realize the God is who He is and He will never leave my side.  No matter what storm I am going through.

Thankfully, my family and I made it through Hurrican Sandy without any problems.  And I know that no matter what other storms we may face, we will be okay.  Because God uses all things for good.  And it’s good to keep that perspective.

Funny the way it is.

I’m not talking about the Dave Matthews song either.  (Although, I’ll admit, I do like that song!)  I’m talking about how funny (if you want to call it that) the way God speaks to us.  I’ve found, especially over the past 6-9 months that when I’ve prayed about an issue, that a bible verse will come to the surface and I will see it again and again.

Here’s an example.  Last week I was struggling with why, when you are a believer and you are walking (an almost) straight line, that you still have “issues”.  After many days/nights of pondering (yes, I ponder 🙂 ) and praying on the issue, I happened across a message from my pastor.  It said, “Just because you’re following God doesn’t mean trouble doesn’t follow you!”.  I was like – whoa!  Okay.  It happened to be a post on Facebook, so I opened up the comments and saw that his wife posted this bible verse:  “The one who is in you is greater than the one who is in this world” 1John 4:4. Whoa..again.  Interesting I thought.

The next day I was doing some research on (a site I love, btw) and guess what verse came up?  1John 4:4.  Hmmmm.

THEN…a day or so later this post showed up in my newsfeed from 88.7 The Bridge:

Coincidence?  I think not!  It is funny, the way it is.  If you just pay attention to the messages around you.  God will speak to you and tell you just what you need to hear.  You just have to be listening!

What’s your sign?

I saw a sign the other day that said, “You gotta look for the good in the bad, the happy in your sad, the gain in your pain, and what makes you grateful not hateful.”  Don’t you love that?

It is so true that our actions are determined by our thoughts, yet, why do I have to keep reminding myself that over and over?  I tell my son that all the time and here I am at 40 still trying to learn that philosophy myself.  Probably because when those bad, sad and painful things happen to us our bodies have that natural flight or fight reaction.  And either way, it’s not good!

But as I like to say, every day is a new day to begin again.   So, today I’m going to embrace the philosophy of the sign I remember and feel good, happy and grateful!

I wonder why.

Years ago when I was in a bad place in my personal life, I wrote this poem to try to express the pain I was feeling:

I wonder why life’s twists and turns

Never gives you what you really yearn

Someone to love you, to make you complete

To help you over life’s many hard feats.

I wonder why people often misunderstand

What you really want out of life’s grand plan

Someone to hold you, to tell you they care

To look in your eyes and really be there.

I wonder why things never seem to change

Heartache and pain always part of the game

You do your best always hanging tough

But in the end it’s still not enough.

I wonder why these things happen to me

When all I want is to love and be free

Be free to give and receive just the same

But it never seems to be part of the aim.

I wonder why I just sit here and stare

With teardrops falling wondering who cares

Hoping that one day all this hurt will end

And maybe my life will begin once again.

After having gone through two divorces (yes, two) and another failed relationship, I was at a loss as to why those relationships kept failing.  Knowing what I know now, I realize that the love I was looking for was not the love of a man, but the love of Jesus.  Unfailing love. Perfect love.  No one will love me more than Him.  When I think on that, I am overwhelmed with emotion. I don’t have to wonder about anything.  I know I am loved.

Pray on.

It’s so easy to get caught up in our day to day lives.  We worry about all the little details, trying to make everything perfect.  Trying to please everyone. We sometimes end up upset or even worse mad when things don’t turn out the way we think they should.  Why do we do these things to ourselves?

The bible says “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7

Have you ever had the peace of God warm over you?  It’s like the sun rising and warming your face.  It’s the feeling of snuggling up to a newborn baby.  Or holding a loved one’s hand.

There have been many times in my life where I could have chosen to break down.  Yet, I chose to ask God for help.  My anxious moments became peaceful moments.  Of course, there have also been times I was so caught up in emotion that I didn’t stop and pray, and I let the situation control me.  I ended up feeling like I’d been beaten up.  It’s hard, I know, when you are deep in a situation to just stop and pray.  But it really, really works.

If you are dealing with any type of frustration today, I encourage you to ask God for His help….ask Him for peace.  He will not dissapoint you!
